Building chromium UPDATE

Now I have had absolutely zero luck with getting the source code using the instructions easily found on the www.chromium.org website.  I had to use these instructions http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/UsingGit in order to get (git) the source code.  Now that I have them I will be attempting to build chromium into a .iso file using VMWare player and Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic as a virtual machine.

Time for an update on what I've been tinkering with.  I have gotten the latest sources for both the Chromium Browser and the Chromium OS.  I explained how in a previous post, but I'd like to adjust some of the procedure.  First of all I mounted a physical hard drive to the Ubuntu Virtual Machine and placed both source trees in seperate folders on it's root directory.  I had downloaded and extracted the bootstrap version of the browser source into "I:\chromium" using 7-zip for windows.  Then I used tortoiseSVN to download the latest sources for the browser. I started up VMWare and installed Ubuntu 9.10, and then I downloaded the depot_tools kit to my home directory and setup the .gclient file for each source tree.  I synced the chromiumOS source in the "I:\chromiumos" folder I had made in windows using ubuntu.  next step was to find the build dependencies I was lacking.  I used the shell script I found at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/wiki/LinuxBuildInstructionsPrerequisites to find and apt-get all the missing libraries.  I am still on this step now.

Bob Hope's Paleface and Son of Paleface.

I just saw these two movies back to back and I gotta say they are some of the best Bob Hope there is.  It's hilarious in that "Let's poke fun at spaghetti westerns" kind of way.  Th first one is just Bob Hope and Jane Russel together and the second one has Roy Rogers and Trigger mixed in.  I think I like these two movies for different reasons though.  Son of Paleface has a bit more of a cartoon/b-movie feel to it.  Paleface has more of a parody feel to it.  Anyway here's some Amazon links for them so you can check them out too.

How to Build Google Chromium using VMWare Player and Ubuntu Karmic

First of all follow the directions laid out by www.chromium.org

Second I had to modify in this way:

Downloaded the Chromium (Browser) source tarball (.tgz) for the bootstrap SVN checkout using windows. I then extracted it to disk using 7-Zip.  Then I copied it from my Shared Folder to the VM using Ubuntu's File Browser.  Sure it takes a while but when you are done with that you will have all the source files on a virtual disk, where they take up fewer blocks of your hard drive.  If you don't believe me take a look in windows and it will tell you in properties "Size on Disk".  I guarantee it's bigger in windows than on that virtual disk.

Next I had to download the ChromiumOS source tarball or check out the SVN repository.  Guess which way I went.  That's right I checked out the repository.  Why?  Because the Chromium Browser has over 220,000 source files, and the OS has quite a bit less than that.  I just couldn't get the browser files downloaded any other way but using that tarball and then updating.

Next will be the gathering of dependencies, and then after that I'll be able to start building it.  Now remember all of this is being done in a VMWare virtual machine, with Ubuntu 9.10 installed.

I've seen Avatar the new James Cameron movie.  I liked it.  The 3D in it was very well done, and not too over the top.  This movie comes at the right time because of all the new advancements in polarization on TVs now allows us to have 3D HDTV.  They say that Avatar is going to be among the first movies to utilize this new technology.

UPDATE!

My life is going well so far. Which is probably why I haven't updated in a while. I really ought to update everyday, but c'est la vie. Anyway, I'm still living in a basement, and I love it. I've got it all setup nicely with easy chairs and everything. My fish seem happy, and my girlfriend seems happy too. I think I'll stay here a while.

I know I know it's an "Everything's Fine" blog post, but I really shouldn't mention my money woes on here cause it seems like "Oh why me?" When I know perfectly well it's my own fault.
